bloxberg builds the bridge between traditional Science and decentralized Science (DeSci) – offering trusted, interoperable infrastructure for the entire DeSci ecosystem: researchers, funders, publishers, DAOs, and science-driven companies.
It empowers the scientific community to own, protect, and govern its data – independently, transparently, and on its own terms.

The Blockchain

Since 2019, bloxberg has provided a global, public-permissioned Layer 1 blockchain infrastructure — built by and for science, yet open to all.
A Layer 2 evolution on Ethereum is underway — bringing scientific trust into the Web3.0 era while keeping the core under academic control: the bloxberg Council. Unlike anonymous and energy-intensive blockchain systems, bloxberg is transparent, accountable, and resource-efficient by design.

The Council

The bloxberg Council unites leading science-driven institutions to safeguard the network’s core processes and uphold scientific sovereignty.
Only Council members operate full ledger nodes, safeguarding every transaction and keeping data integrity under the full control of science.
Membership is reserved for research institutions and science-focused organizations.

BLOXBERG PIONEER - THE MAX PLANCK SOCIETY

The idea for a scientific blockchain infrastructure emerged in 2018 within the Max Planck Society, driven by two members of the Max Planck Digital Library. What began as an internal solution for trusted timestamping, soon grew into a global vision. In early 2019, eleven leading research institutions from ten countries gathered at Ringberg Castle close to Lake Tegernsee in Bavaria to officially found the bloxberg consortium — marking the genesis of the world’s first blockchain network, operated exclusively by scientific organizations. From the outset, the Max Planck Society has played a pioneering role in shaping bloxberg: not only as the initiator and co-founder, but as a long-term advocate for scientific sovereignty, open infrastructure, and decentralized trust. Drawing on decades of leadership in advancing Open Access and Open Science, the Max Planck Digital Library views Decentralized Science as the next logical step in the evolution of research. Especially in the realm of scientific publishing, bloxberg is set to become a game changer — paving the way for more open, verifiable, and community-driven forms of publishing beyond traditional gatekeepers.
